Candidate Fraud and Noise: Moving from Detection to Prevention

1500 applicants overnight. 70% are fakes. 20% are bots. The rest is a mix of noise, spam, lookalike resumes, and maybe some great talent hiding in there too. How did we get here? Why are we accepting this as the new normal? And how do we solve for it in an AI world where our teams are leaner than ever and everything is suddenly easy to fake… at scale… for pennies.

Everyone seems to be treating noisy funnels as the status quo, something we just have to learn to live with. More often than not, the focus is on detection: signals on resumes, flags during interviews, the three-finger test, or the latest fraud tool. These are all important parts of the conversation.

But what if we didn't just accept it? Instead of focusing on detecting fraud that's already polluting our pipelines, what if we revamped our processes, tactics, and skills to proactively prevent it from happening in the first place? What if we could replace bad actors, cheating, and noise with real signal so genuine talent can stand out?

In this session, Stacy Zapar, Founder of Tenfold and Fraud Squad, will explore how we got here, what needs to change, and the practical strategies recruiters can use to start taking back control of their pipelines.

Attendee Takeaways
  • Move from a reactive detection mindset to a proactive prevention mindset without sacrificing candidate experience.
  • Apply the principles of Candidate Curation: a continuous approach to attraction, assessment, and authentication throughout the hiring process.
  • Implement Smart Friction that is high effort for bad actors but low effort (or even invisible) for real candidates.
  • Use deterrents, tripwires, and stacked signals to reduce fraud, cheating, volume, and noise so real talent can shine through.
